The heritage-listed Landhausgarten Dr. Max Fraenkel is one of the most beautiful public green spaces in Spandau.

In the late 1920s, the banker Dr Max Fraenkel created an oasis at the gates of the metropolis at the south-western end of Kladow. He commissioned the renowned Berlin landscape architect Erwin Barth to design the garden around his villa by the banks of the Havel. A paradise was created with a small wood, an artificial stream, fruit trees and vegetable beds. Even then, city dwellers dreamed of living in the countryside.

Today once again, you can walk among the currant bushes, chard and rose bushes. But it’s not just a place for horticultural enthusiasts to visit. There are all kinds of hidden places and meadows to linger in, and the sunny terrace of the summer café offers a beautiful view of the Havel while you enjoy a slice of cake or a cool beer.

From dry land, you can reach the Landhausgarten via the Berlin Wall Trail and the Havel Riverside Trail, which is also connected to the European Cycle Route. Waterborne visitors can even land directly next to the site. Motorboats can moor at the public marina at Imchenplatz, from where it’s just a short stroll to Dr Fraenkel.
